I’m a freestyle ski coach who enjoys being an athlete from time to time. It can be a challenge wearing both hats, or perhaps better said, it can be a challenge knowing when to wear your ‘athlete hat’ vs. your ‘coaching hat.’
A challenge requires great mental and physical effort in order to be done successfully, and therefore tests a person’s abilities. When a challenge meets, or just slightly exceeds, an athlete’s physical competence, optimal performance and improved learning are possible. This is a basic requirement for triggering performances in the flow state or “the zone.”
